Gate Of Pain

Mission + Bonus

Gate of Pain is a mostly straightforward mission and bonus as a ranged character.

For this mission you'll want to bring:

  • +10 vs Fire shield
  • A running skill
  • Healing of some form for yourself
  • Interrupts / KDs are useful for preventing damage on yourself
  • Ranged degen (ideally going /r as longbow helps you stay out of range)

Here is an example build on R/A - note that PVE skills are not really needed but as per usual are useful if your ruleset allows them. The main ideal requirement is having ranged degen of some form.

Getting past the flesh tunnel

You have to start by pulling the group on the left (at the end of the tunnel) through. This will give you room to run by. Don't break aggro from them until you're at the start of the tunnel.
Note: you can alternatively take the left path and skip the two groups of Torment creatures without agroing them (there is enough room thanks to their patroling route).

Once you've made it past them you'll then need to safely head towards the first bonus group (you approach from the right). You'll want your fire shield on here and if you have YMLAD - use it to KD the dryder that isn't casting meteor shower. You'll have to wait for the second group to reach the end of the tunnel, pull them out a bit and then run past them. Be sure to keep your healing up while doing all of this so you can get out of the end of the tunnel.

First Bonus Group

Once you get to the end of the tunnel, the first bonus group will be on the left. Clear out the elementalists in your way first by applying degen from range, and breaking aggro. Once you've done so you can run up to the 'bone wall' and on the other side you'll find the bonus NPCs. This is one case where having the longbow helps a lot, you can apply poison, bleeding etc to all the mobs at range and avoid having less space to work with later. If you can't reach them for whatever reason don't worry, you can grab them when you go back around. NOTE: You MUST kill the whole group (1 Emissary, and 3 Terrorwebs) to count for the bonus.

Heading to Torturewebs - Torturewebs 1-3

You'll notice as you move down the mission path groups of torment creatures. It's highly advised to just ignore these - this mission can be done without killing any of them and because the creatures duplicate themselves, you might lack DPS to hit through their duplicate skill. Proceed to the right from where you exited the tunnel and then go down the left path towards the first bonus group killing Torturewebs at a distance as you go.

When you run into the patrols of torment creatures, try to avoid them / walk around them where possible. If you find they're a bit stuck note that these patrols can have their leash range extended, so longbow them, and pull them back to somewhere that will give you more room.

Once you've killed all the bottom 3 Torturewebs, kill the bonus group if you haven't already.

Some advices, especially if ever you choose to not kill the enemies with degen:

  • Rain of Terror have Mind Freeze and you thus should really avoid them.
  • Words of Madness can heal their allies from different groups, including Dryders.
  • Torment Creatures only use their duplicate skill below 40% HP, usually when they have nothing else to do. Once they use it, they take double damage. Note that the summoned creature will not be in the party of the summoner.
  • Shadow of Fear summon minions and are able to keep them forever with Jagged Bones. If ever you end up in a situation in which a Shadow of Fear has minions, you can leave the compass range of the Shadow of Fear for long enough (~2 minutes) to disable its AI: when you'll come back, minions will have disappeared.
  • Tortureweb dryders use Soul Torture every 45 seconds. During the activation time of this skill (15 seconds) they can only use Ether Prism and are therefore harmless. But this skill is easily interruptible (get interrupted when attacked), so you'll only be able to damage the harmless Tortureweb dryders with spells.
  • Tortureweb dryders, as most Nightfall bosses, have no natural resistance, but cast twice faster and deal twice more damage, meaning that they likely can kill you with 2 spells.
  • Tortureweb dryders do not go back to their original location when you break aggro.

Bonus Group #2

Once that's cleared, carefully head back and then start heading north towards the center bonus group. You'll find both groups of torment creatures, and paired Terrorwebs. For safety reasons around this section, try and kill any patrolling terrorwebs as they patrol quite far both ways around the northern Torture webs. The Stairs leading toward the 2nd bonus group are a good place to do this, and note you can head north after going up those stairs to reach the other groups. Be sure to kill the whole 2nd Emissary's group as well when you've made room.

Torturewebs 4-6 & final bonus group

The final leg of the mission is the hardest section, mostly due to a group of torment creatures with a very annoying path. After you've cleared the patrolling Terrorwebs to the north, run by the torment group on the right and kill Tortureweb #4 (Top right). Then do the same for the Tortureweb #5 (Top Middle) as well. Once you've killed these two when heading towards the final bonus group & last Tortureweb you'll notice a torment creature group that's pretty much in the way of doing both. Pull this group via longbow back through the 'north' exit from the center, pulling them all the way down to the stairs and then to the left slightly towards the Tortureweb #1-#3 spots. Use your running skills to break aggro, head east and run around them and back north then towards the final bonus.

Note that sometimes even when pulling them this far away they can run back, you do have room on the north west side by the final tortureweb, you can run past him and have a spot of safety but DO NOT kill him before finishing the bonus group if you do this. Kill the final bonus group and the final Tortureweb to complete the mission & bonus!
